A SCHOOL GIRL COMMITTED SUICIDE AFTER BEING BULLIED
Stories about bullied teens taking their own lives are too numerous to ignore. There is a fine line between bullying and suicide, and an urgency to understand this will save millions of Children being bullied in schools.
Bullying can drive victims from depression and hopelessness to ideation to suicidal.
On 12 April 2021 a video footage of a young South African school girl who was filmed being bullied at Mbilwi High School in Limpopo Circulated online.
Video footage description: Lufuno Mavhunga and her school mate are in an argument over a R5 coin before a third party cuts in and gave Lufuno Mavhunga several slaps and beating. Lufuno was defenseless, and like a sheep before the shearers, she did not open his mouth. All she could do is shield herself with her arms. It was very painful to watch.
Lufuno Mavhunga was totally humiliated by the bully and other students who were Laughing, mocking and cheering in the background. The incident took place in Mbilwi High school in Limpopo.
Lufuno Mavhunga was insulted, mocked, humiliated and bullied by the student and going to her death like a bridegroom to the altar, committed suicide shortly after the incident.
This wasn’t the first time the young girl had been bullied in same school. She has literally turned to object of ridicule. This was confirmed by the statement made by her father. The father of the victim apparently said that the abuse had been going on for a while, and that the school never did anything despite the matter being reported.
Lufuno Mavhunga took her own life shortly after the incident probably because It was difficult for her to continue with the humiliation.
Many social media users – including high profile celebrities have spoken bitterly again this incident trending the hashtag #JusticeForLufuno
Investigation is currently going on and we believe justice will prevail. The government needs to set up legal protections against bullying at school.
